Same-sex Wedding at DC Brewery: Maggie + Whitney

Who has a unity beer, instead of a candle? Or for that matter, a wedding at a brewery? Answer: Maggie and Whitney. They did it their way. More than that, I believe that the extremely excellent beer, fine donuts, wood fired pizza and zesty BBQ tell us about Maggie and Whitney’s desire to invite happiness into their life together, and with it bring pleasure into the lives of their family and friends. Their recessional exit led them right to the food trucks! Right Proper Brewing is a cool place, but I like to think about it more metaphorically—the setting reflects a focus on relationships.

Maggie and Whitney’s wedding was the Nora Ephron movie I always wanted. While I love the late writer’s work, I found a blind spot when it came to representing the joy of food in Julie and Julia. There lacked a sensuality in that movie that Julia Child clearly exuded in real life. (Not so in, say, Big Night.) Maggie and Whitney’s wedding brought together the words of love, with the touch, the taste, the smell of living with love.

Thank you for inviting me to witness that day. It was a privilege to be there.
